“A life cycle perspective help to frame the important questions we need to tackle next”
Join us for the next Life Cycle Talks with Martyn Futter, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. In his upcoming talk, Martyn will talk about some of the challenges in communicating and using water-related information to inform individual and societal decision making.
In anticipation of the talk, we had the opportunity to chat with Martyn Futter and learn more about his work and the insights he will share.
Can you describe your research?
“I am interested in the way water moves through the environment and the feedbacks between the water cycle and human activities, especially the connections between water and carbon.”
What motivated you to pursue research related to the life cycle perspective?
“I got interested in the question when I first became aware of the Water Footprint and had some questions I still struggle with about the best way to think about evaporation in production landscapes.”
What impact do you hope your research will have?
“I hope that my work, and the work of the research community as a whole, can contribute to an improved societal awareness about water, both in our daily lives and in our planetary future.”
Why do you believe the life cycle perspective plays an important role in research?
“I like life cycle perspectives because they promote structured thinking about complex questions. A life cycle perspective may not give us all the answers but it will certainly help to frame the important questions we need to tackle next.”
