“LCA offers a unique perspective, allowing me to view the world from a different angle”
Join us for the first Life Cycle Talk of the fall season, featuring Shan Zhang, PhD candidate at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. In her upcoming talk, she will discuss how to assess the environmental performance of emerging batteries using the life cycle assessment (LCA) approach.
In anticipation of the talk, we had the opportunity to chat with Shan Zhang and learn more about her research and the insights she will share.
Can you describe your research and key findings?
“My research focuses on evaluating the environmental impacts of emerging battery technologies using LCA and prospective LCA, analysing these battery systems at a future point when they have achieved their highest technology readiness level.”
What motivated you to pursue research related to the life cycle perspective?
“LCA offers a unique perspective, allowing me to view the world from a different angle. It’s interesting to explore systems in such a detailed and comprehensive manner. LCA is inherently interdisciplinary, giving me the opportunity to step outside my knowledge box.”
What impact do you hope your research will have?
“I hope to contribute to the field by deepening people’s understanding of the environmental impacts associated with emerging batteries. I also aim for my research outcomes to help process engineers and battery researchers identify environmental hotspots, further supporting the sustainable development of next-generation batteries.”
Why do you believe the life cycle perspective plays an important role in research?
“The life cycle perspective requires an interdisciplinary approach, bringing together stakeholders from various fields. This collaboration can lead to more innovative ideas and solutions. It offers a holistic understanding of complex systems, providing a framework for decision-making that considers the broader context and potential trade-offs across the whole system.”
